RC Scale Planes - All About Radio Controlled Planes

In RC Planes of RC Plane Enthusiast (August 13, 2008 9:45 am)

Radio controlled airplanes, or, as they’re often called, RC scale planes, are model aircraft that you control using a handheld transmitter. There’s a receiver inside the airplane that controls the servos, moving control surfaces that adjust the plane’s flight in relation to how you move the joysticks. Since the parts for these planes are relatively inexpensive, RC scale airplanes have been a popular hobby for years and that hobby is still growing. There are models and styles for pretty much every budget and taste. Whether you love planes from the 1940s, or are a big fan of the ones that fly now, there’s an RC plane kit that will make you happy. They come in many different sizes, too – from just under three feet long to more than ninety inches in length. You can buy them ARC (almost ready to cover), which means they’ve been partially assembled, but not painted or fully assembled; ARF (almost ready to fly), meaning completely built and covered, but not decorated, and in disassembled kit form. There are different types of propulsion and flight style, some of which are more suitable for beginners, and others of which are more fun for the advanced flier.

Originally, most RC scale planes burned fuel to get off the ground, usually gasoline or methanol, but sometimes diesel. However, batteries and electric motors have gotten smaller, lighter, and cheaper over the years. That means that the numbers of electric remote control scale planes are on the rise. After all, it’s easier to make a plane that runs on electricity. It’s quieter, less dangerous, and there’s no messy, smelly fuel to deal with. You can buy many different styles of RC scale aircraft, including models that imitate planes from both World Wars, jet planes, modern military RC aircraft kits, and civilian RC airplanes. Planes from the different periods are often made to the most exactly authentic standards possible, so that they’re actual miniature versions of the original plane. This is done within reason, of course, since there are some things you can’t do in miniature.

Radio controlled RC scale planes are a fun hobby, enjoyed by kids and adults alike. It’s not hard to get started, since many hobby shops both in the real world and online carry planes, kits, and parts. You can get plans for twenty to thirty dollars or so, with each plan getting more expensive as the scale goes down. Kits can cost as little as seventy-five dollars or as much as a thousand. That’s a bit of an investment, even on the cheap end, but RC scale planes still aren’t a hobby that will break the bank, especially when you consider all the fun you can have with them. If you’ve ever thought about buying an RC airplane, you shouldn’t put it off any longer. These planes are a lot of fun, both to build and to fly, and are getting cheaper and easier to use. Join the many other people throughout the world who enjoy flying RC planes. Check online to see which planes you like, and to find others who are into this great hobby, or see if there are any good stores or groups in your local area.
